Mamelodi Sundowns have made a significant addition to their coaching staff with the appointment of Romain Folz as the club’s new Assistant Coach. The announcement comes as the team gears up for the new Premier Soccer League (PSL) season and continues their pre-season preparations in Austria.

Romain Folz, the former AmaZulu FC head coach, has been recruited to strengthen Mamelodi Sundowns' technical team. Folz will be working alongside seasoned coaches Steve Komphela and Manqoba Mngqithi, as well as goalkeeping experts Wendell Robinson and Kennedy Mweene. His appointment is part of the club's strategy to build on their recent successes and maintain their competitive edge in both domestic and continental competitions.

Sundowns made the announcement via their official club website: “Mamelodi Sundowns has appointed Romain Folz as an Assistant Coach in the first team. Romain joins the 2023/24 PSL Champions from FIFA’s High-Performance Department, where he worked on the development of football. Folz, who holds a UEFA Pro License, has previously worked in South Africa and across Africa in Guinea, Botswana, and Ghana.”

Previously, Folz worked within FIFA’s high-performance department, focusing on football development. His role involved analyzing and improving football standards globally, which aligns with Sundowns' ambitions to enhance their performance. With a UEFA Pro License and extensive experience in African football—having managed teams in Guinea, Botswana, and Ghana—Folz brings valuable expertise to the team.

Departure of Rhulani Mokwena and the New Leadership

Folz’s appointment follows the departure of Rhulani Mokwena, who led Sundowns to an impressive seventh consecutive DStv Premiership title and the inaugural African Football League crown before joining Moroccan giants Wydad AC. Mokwena’s departure marked the end of a highly successful chapter, and Folz’s recruitment signals a new phase for the club.

Steve Komphela’s return as senior coach, alongside Folz and Mngqithi, sets the stage for a refreshed approach to the upcoming season. The experienced coaching trio aims to build on Sundowns' recent achievements and drive the team to further success.

Sundowns are currently in Austria for their pre-season training camp, where Folz has already joined the squad. The club is using this period to fine-tune their strategies and integrate new signings. The pre-season matches will be crucial as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season. In addition to Folz's appointment, Sundowns have made significant moves in the transfer market. They recently acquired defender Kegan Johannes from SuperSport United, joining on a permanent deal. Johannes is the third signing of the transfer window, following midfielder Kobamelo Kodisang from Moreirense FC and Brazilian centre-forward Arthur de Oliveira Sales.

Mamelodi Sundowns are focused on maintaining their dominance in the PSL and making a significant impact in CAF inter-club competitions. After winning the inaugural African Football League title and securing their seventh consecutive league title last season, the club is determined to continue their success. Their performance in the CAF Champions League, where they reached the semi-finals, has also set high expectations for the new season.
